Consultation and Survey Services

Whether you’re preparing a planning application or simply wish to better understand the birdlife on your land, Manx BirdLife offers a range of expert survey services tailored to your needs. Our experienced team conducts both one-off and seasonal surveys to support conservation, land management, and legal compliance.

Services Available

Protected Species Survey

This survey assesses the presence or likely presence of species protected under national and international wildlife legislation. It evaluates how proposed activities—such as construction or land clearance—could impact these species and provides strategies for mitigation, avoidance, or compensation.
These surveys are often required as part of the planning permission process and are essential for ensuring compliance with wildlife protection laws.

Protected species surveys can be conducted year-round.

Breeding Bird Survey

Designed to identify bird species that are breeding, or have the potential to breed, on a given site. Birds are key indicators of environmental change so monitoring their populations provides vital insights into broader ecological trends and helps identify species at risk or in decline. This information supports targeted conservation efforts across the Island.

Typically conducted between March and July.

Curlew

Wintering Bird Survey

This survey involves the systematic observation and counting of bird species that overwinter in a particular area. It helps track population trends, detect changes over time, assess winter habitat quality, and guide effective habitat management strategies.

Best conducted between September and March.

Bat Activity Survey

Conducted at dusk and/or dawn using specialist bat detectors, this survey determines whether bats are present on a site. All bat species are protected under the Wildlife Act, making it an offence to harm bats or disturb their roosts—even if bats are not currently present.

Surveys are usually carried out between May and September.

Data request

The Manx National Bird Database, managed by Manx BirdLife, holds over eight million bird records dating back to 1998. This resource can support both large-scale developments and smaller projects, even those not requiring formal planning permission. We can provide tailored data reports for specific sites or areas of interest.

Drone Survey

Manx BirdLife is equipped to carry out drone surveys, offering high-resolution aerial imagery—including thermal imaging—for a variety of ecological and planning applications.

Habitat Improvement Advice

Our team can offer tailored guidance on enhancing your land for wildlife. This includes recommendations on habitat creation, suitable nest box types, and optimal placement to support local bird and bat populations.

Please Note: It is a legal offence to disturb protected wild bird species during land or building alterations. Always seek professional advice before proceeding with work.
