Sandy bay with harbour at Sulby river-mouth. Artificial Mooragh Lake to north partly drained in winter. Steep wooded hillside to south.
Sandy Bay and the Sulby River-mouth offer a rich variety of habitats and birdlife. To the north lies the artificial Mooragh Lake, which is partly drained in winter, creating ideal conditions for wintering waders.
To the south, a steep, wooded hillside rises, providing excellent opportunities for woodland birds.
The area opposite the Grand Island Hotel is particularly good for spotting seaduck and divers, with occasional unusual wildfowl seen in Ramsey Harbour and on the lake. Visitors can park at the Hairpin and explore a network of paths across the hillside, where you’re likely to encounter Sparrowhawk, Blackcap in summer, and Wood Warbler during spring passage and into the summer months.
