Sandy bay with indented rocky shore leading S. to Poyllvaaish or W to Gansey shore
Strandhall, located in Baie ny Carrickey, is a scenic sandy bay with an indented rocky shoreline that stretches south to Poyllvaaish (SC245676) and west to Gansey Shore (SC218688). At low tide, the exposed rocks and seaweed create ideal feeding grounds for ducks, waders, and gulls, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. Parking is available at Strandhall, with a coastal lane leading to Poyllvaaish Farm before turning north past the ancient site of Balladoole to rejoin the A5. Alternatively, you can follow the coastline along the A5 towards Port St. Mary, arriving at the historic ‘Shore Hotel’.
The view across Baie ny Carrickey towards Gansey Beach and Bradda Head is particularly rewarding in winter, with sightings of wildfowl such as Shelduck, Wigeon, Pale-bellied Brent Goose, Golden and Grey Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, and large flocks of Chough, especially below Kentraugh. In summer, look out for Shelduck and Ringed Plover along the shore.
