If you’re travelling from Douglas, take the A5 south to Ballasalla (don’t forget to say hello to the fairies as you cross the famous Fairy Bridge). From there, continue on the A3 toward Castletown, then follow signs to Port St Mary. Once in Port St Mary, head for The Howe and continue along Sound Road until you reach the Sound car park.
This dramatic southernmost tip of the Isle of Man offers one of the island’s finest sea-watching locations, with panoramic views across the narrow strait to the Calf of Man. The viewing point here is ideal for spotting a variety of seabirds and marine life, particularly during migration seasons and in strong onshore winds.
The cliffs and offshore rocks around the Sound are home to guillemots, razorbills, puffins, and kittiwakes, especially during the breeding season. Gannets can often be seen diving spectacularly offshore, while manx shearwaters glide low across the waves in summer. Choughs are regularly seen wheeling over the headland, and both herring gulls and great black-backed gulls are common. With a bit of luck, you may also spot the powerful great skua patrolling the skies.
Beyond birdlife, the Sound is a superb location to see grey seals basking on the rocks around the Calf. In calm conditions, porpoises and dolphins may also be seen offshore.
