Are you looking for a fun, outdoor activity this Christmas? Look no further! The Isle of Man Christmas Bird Race is back, and it’s the perfect way to enjoy the holiday season while connecting with nature.
From December 25th to December 31st, join Manx BirdLife and birdwatchers across the Island for an exciting and collaborative birding event. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a complete beginner, this event is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to get involved!
How It Works
The rules are simple and straightforward:
- Observe and record bird sightings across the Isle of Man and its territorial waters during the last week of the year.
- The event starts at 00:01 on December 25th and ends at 23:59 on December 31st.
- Report your sightings to Manx Birdlife through their sightings page, or share your observations on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #ManxBirdRace. You can also use the downloadable recording card to keep track.
- Have fun while enjoying some of the fantastic wildlife found in the Isle of Man.
Set Your Own Challenges
The Christmas Bird Race is all about fun and community but feel free to challenge yourself! Maybe you want to beat last year’s tally or maybe there is a bird you have yet to see this year. Whatever your aim, share your goals and updates with the community on social media to encourage friendly competition and collaboration.
You can participate as much or as little as you’d like, whether you're birdwatching solo or with a group of friends. Don’t worry if you’re new to birding—everyone is welcome to join in, regardless of experience.
Record the Most Species!
Last year’s Christmas Bird Race set an impressive record with 121 bird species spotted! Can you help beat that record in 2024? Whether you’re an experienced birder or just getting started, this event offers an exciting chance to see a variety of species and contribute to the community’s birding efforts.
Stay Involved and Stay Safe
Throughout the week, you can follow updated information on the Bird Race by visiting Manx BirdLife’s social media pages. Keep an eye on everyone’s progress, and see how your sightings compare with others in the event!
Remember, the Bird Race is about enjoying nature, so common sense and courtesy should always come first. Be mindful of the birds and wildlife around you, and never enter private property without permission. Stay safe and respectful during your birdwatching adventures!
